On the sun exposed areas of your body, wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. With most sunscreens, it’s important to apply them before you’re in the sun. They need to be applied liberally and re-applied at least every two hours after sweating, swimming or towelling off. Sunscreens are rated by an SPF (Sun Protective Factor) number, which is a multiplier of your skin’s exposure time before burning. For example, an SPF of 4 means that you can stay in the sun four times longer before burning, than if you were wearing no sunscreen at all. Bear in mind that you can’t add SPF numbers. If an SPF 4 product gives you an hour in the sun, re-applying it won’t give you another hour. Your time’s up! If you want longer exposure next time use a higher SPF before going outside.

If you have suffered from sun damage, consider these suggestions to help your body recover faster.
Take vitamin C. One of its primary functions in the body is to maintain collagen levels and promote healing. Collagen is a protein necessary for the formation of
connective tissue in the skin, ligaments and bones and is what keeps your skin tight.

Essential fatty acids are key structural components of the cell wall and give skin its smoothness and suppleness. They also help to prevent water loss from the skin itself. Insufficient intake of essential fatty acids often occurs when we reduce our fat intake. The result is a loss in skin elasticity and premature ageing. As water is lost, the skin becomes dry, rough and loses its firmness. Essential fatty acids are found in nuts, seeds and oily fish such as salmon – or you can take a supplement like flax seed oil, evening primrose oil or fish oil.

Protein contributes amino acids, which supply the raw materials for maintaining the genetic code (DNA), repairing damaged muscle tissue, for cell division, making enzymes, building new connective tissue and manufacturing hormones and neurotransmitters. Protein comes from all animal products, nuts, seeds and soy products.

If you have over-exposed your skin and sustained a burn, then a mixture of aloe vera gel, colloidal silver and lavender essential oil should help to limit the pain, heal the skin and help to prevent infection.
Be safe when outdoors. And in all cases of sunburn or over-exposure to the sun, seek professional advice.
