So far, the biggest grossing movie on New Year’s week was Meet the Fockers with $US41.7 million. But now, Avatar has crushed that record with $US68.3 million.

It’s the best third weekend in the history of movie releases, more importantly when you put all of Avatar’s earnings together in its first three weeks, it grosses $US1.02 billion dollars. 

No movie has ever done it that fast, and Avatar is now sure to become the second biggest grossing movie of all time. Remember this is still after just three weeks in the marketplace. No doubt the franchise holders will be anxious to keep the momentum going strong for the Cameron campaign.
