Record Nominations for New Zealander of The Year
Judges have the difficult task of wading through the details of hundreds of Kiwis who have made an impact on the world stage or a difference in their own communities before deciding the next Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year.
Nominations have closed for the 2012 Awards with nearly 500 nominations received from the public in the five different categories from every region across New Zealand.
Awards national manager Emma Mcdonald said the “quality of the nominations is exceptional and the Awards Office has been humbled by the stories of amazing contributions individuals and organisations are making to our community and the nation.”
Among the well-known Kiwis nominated in the New Zealander of the Year category are Sir Peter Leitch (The Mad Butcher) who has contributed greatly to New Zealand through his charity and fundraising work, Garth McVicar founder of the Sensible Sentencing Trust and philanthropist & entrepreneur Gareth Morgan amongst others.
Current New Zealander of the Year, Sir Paul Callaghan has nominated Richard Taylor who established Weta Workshop not only for setting a shining example by being a global player in the international movie industry, but decidedly choosing to base himself in New Zealand. Sir Paul states “The man is a legend who shows us all how it can be done while remaining true to our Kiwi values.”
Sport related nominations include World Cup rugby star and cancer survivor Aaron Cruden of the Manawatu whose nomination was received prior to his call up to the winning All Blacks, Arthur Clap, Chief Executive of the Winter Games and endurance runner Malcolm Law who has run some extraordinary distances for charity – including running New Zealand’s seven great walks in seven days!
Some extraordinary nominations were also received for the women of New Zealand including Suzie Moncrieff, founder of the hugely successful and international World of Wearable Arts, Jacqui Ritchie who founded Bellyful, an organisation providing meals and support to families with new babies and Susana Fiu Fetalai, Manager of the Mother of Divine Mercy Women’s Refuge in West Auckland.
Among the lesser-known but equally worthy nominations are Sean Scully, who along with his massive Irish Wolfhound put his life on hold to help the residents of Christchurch following the February Earthquake and Dr Dave Jenkins, the founder of Surf Aid International whose aim is to improve the health and well being of those living in isolated areas near Indonesia and connected to them through Surfing.
A high number of nominations have been received in Coca Cola Amatil Young New Zealander of the Year category which features high achievers in the arts, academia, sport and leadership including Sam Johnson, Founder of the Student Volunteer Army.
The Mitre 10 Community of the Year judges face an arduous task with diverse nominations received from the towns of Bluff and Paeroa to organisations Kilimanjaro New Zealand and Rebuild Christchurch as an example of the high standard received in this category.
Over the next six weeks, judges will whittle down the nominations to a short list, before naming three finalists in each category in early December.
The categories in the New Zealander of the Year Awards are:
• Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year
• Countdown Senior New Zealander of the Year
• Coco Cola Amatil Young New Zealander of the Year
• Mitre 10 Community of the Year
• Kiwibank Local Heroes
2012 winners will be publicly announced in Auckland on February 16 at a prestigious Awards event.
