Do yourself a favour this year – don’t settle for the status quo. It’s only human to desire continued growth, expansion and fulfilment. Such things are achieved through reaching our goals, attaining new possessions and learning new ideas. We strive for these things, and many of us set New Year’s resolutions in the hope they will deliver those aims. However, there is a problem with this.

What most of us don’t know is that there are mysterious forces at work, which act to prevent us from “having it all.”
“Mysterious forces?” you ask. That’s right – but not market or economic forces, staff or suppliers or anything else external. The mysterious forces I’m talking about are internal. They live within us.
Many of us will secretly wish for more profits, for a larger business, a new car or something else we yearn for. How often does that wish fail to come true? We desperately want these things, we picture them in our minds – yet usually, that isn’t enough to ensure that wish is fulfilled.

What’s happening is that the mysterious forces are at work – our habits. We all have thousands of habits, which act on a sub-conscious level so we are not consciously controlling them – yet they are often controlling us. Many habits serve us well and have gotten us to this point in our lives – and many actively get in the way of achieving our dreams.
Habits can be thought of as programming in our brain. We have all been programmed in many ways from a very early age. These programmes are a result of conscious and unconscious choices we have been making for years.

Answer these: “What is your favourite colour and favourite flavour of ice cream?” Now, try and remember the exact moment when you made those decisions? Chances are, you can’t because you didn’t consciously make those choices – they just happened. Our brains have been programmed with thousands of habits in just the same way. The good news is that just as our brains have been programmed – we can also reprogramme them!
