Nick Ward had the very good fortune to speak to sultry screen siren, and sometimes villain, 23 year-old Michelle Ang - the world famous in New Zealand… and the rest of the world star of Neighbours, Outrageous Fortune, Xena, The Tribe and much more. She also has a degree in chemistry… in both senses of the word.

Born in Malaysia?
No, I’m born in Christchurch, am of Malaysian extraction.

So you crawled your way up the country?
Well no, I grew up in Wellington, went back to Malaysia for two years, but did most of my growing up in Wellington. When I got a job that brought me to Auckland I was under the illusion that it would only be for a short work period, so I only bought summer clothes. Then it became 8 months, and then a year and I have finally come to admit that perhaps I have moved to Auckland.

So you have moved here by degrees.
Yes (laughs) .

You went to Victoria University?
I went to my graduation ceremony and got my piece of paper. I have a degree in Commerce and Chemistry. Although I have had a little taste of being in an accounting firm and I don’t think I am quite the person to fit in that environment. I like being methodical and having order – but I love my creative side too, and I don’t think creative accounting is appreciated.

But do you bring some of that order to your acting?
I think so, yes. I like to know exactly where I am in terms of the character’s journey. I guess good actors do that anyway, but I like to map it out on paper.

You were involved in the Young and Hungry season, is that were you started?
I started out in school because I actually did the Young and Hungry at the end of Uni. I started out doing plays –b like Bugsy Malone, I was one of the lounge girls. We had a couple of trashy plays where the music director made up his own stuff, but I won’t name the school or the play, it was too tragic.
