Hummer HX

Small and lightweight aren’t qualities that you’d generally equate with the Hummer. But times are changing and the SUV is beginning to shy away from gas-guzzling, earth-pounding, ice cap-shrinking monster it once was.

Does this mean an end to the Schwarzeneggermobile as we know it? Probably not for a while yet. The Hummer HX is part of a growing Hummer family. The HX is penned as the small brother to H1 (the big daddy), the H2 (the slightly smaller big daddy) and the H3 (the even smaller big daddy).

“We’ve made our intentions clear that we want to expand our product line. To do this, we need another smaller vehicle,”
says Hummer’s general manager, Martin Walsh.

The HX is powered by a 3.6-litre direct-injected V-6, tuned to pump out 304 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The gearbox of choice is GM’s 6L50 six-speed automatic, and there’s a full-time 4WD system with a locking centre differential. Power is transferred to the pavement care of 20-inch wheels wearing custom 35-inch Bridgestone Dueler tyres.

Fox Racing coilovers with 2-inch shocks and 2.5-inch springs support the independent front and rear suspensions and also provide ground clearance of 13 inches. The nimble HX can handle a 60 percent grade, 40 percent side slope, and ford two feet of water whilst seating four.

The HX is also versatile. The Hummvee-inspired slant-back rear roof can be removed or replaced with a traditional square wagon-like unit. A la Chrysler Jeep, the centre roof is removable as are the doors and fender flares.

To protect the business side of the vehicle, the HX is fitted with a full underbody armour kit. The HX includes front and rear recovery hooks and a power winch on the front bumper.
Inside is a minimalist take on a traditional Hummer interior. Aluminium is the metal of choice while a rubber-coated floor takes the place of carpeting. Compact and lightweight seats are each fitted with a four-point harness. A true sign of the times comes from the fact that there’s no stereo present, just speakers and a USB connector for your MP3 player.

The three-pod gauge cluster is made up of LCD screens that house a navigation system and compass, and can switch between an on-road mode, displaying a speedo/rev counter and an off-road mode that includes a wheel angle indicator.
It is likely that the HX will hit the marketplace named as the H4 sometime after 2010.
