October 4, 1923.
Charlton Heston was born John Charles Heston in Evanston, Illinois.

1944
Heston left college and enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces. He served for two years as a B-25 radio operator/gunner stationed in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands with the Eleventh Air Force, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Heston married student Lydia Marie Clarke. After the war, the two lived in Hell's Kitchen, New York City, where they worked as models. They have a son, Fraser Clarke Heston and an adopted daughter, Holly Ann Heston.

1950
Charlton appears in his first feature film Dark City.

1952

Largely acknowledged as his breakthrough role Heston plays a circus manager in the film The Greatest Show on Earth.

1956
Heston plays the role of Moses in The 10 Commandments. A role that would largely contribute to his icon status.

1959
After Burt Lancaster turned down the role of Ben-Hur, Heston accepted the role, going on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. Heston would be identified with the Biblical epic more than any other actor.

1961
When an Oklahoma movie theater premiering his movie was segregated, Charlton joined a picket line outside in protest

1963
During the civil rights march held in Washington, D.C. in 1963, he accompanied Martin Luther King Jr.

1965
Heston becomes president of the Screen Actors Guild (which would last until 1971).

1968
Charlton stars in the hugely successful Planet of the Apes

Following the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Heston appeared on The Joey Bishop Show and, along with fellow actors Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas and James Stewart, called for public support for President Johnson's Gun Control Act of 1968.

1970
Charlton Heston plays the role of Marc Antony in Julius Ceaser.

1972
Heston again plays Marc Antony this time in the film Antony And Cleopatra, which he also directed.
