Sure, Luke Skywalker might have had the force but compared to Han Solo he was a sissy boy nancy. Han Solo was the true star of the original franchise and that should  be honoured… in the form of a desk – apparently.

This inspiring piece of office furniture, which uses the carbonite frozen form of Han Solo as its base was designed and assembled by the insanely talented Tom Spina and Richard Riley of Tom Spina Designs, a New York-based company specialising in the creation of custom sculpture, functional art and the restoration and display of original movie props.

Made for Mark Hall, apparent movie nerd and lead singer of the Grammy Award-winning group, Casting Crowns, the desk took two months to create. Composed of four main components, the desk has two internally-lit side panels, the iconic “carbonite block” and a glass work surface. The side panels feature computer-cut steel housings with tinted acrylic accents backlit by internal lighting. The “carbonite” section began life as a licensed Star Wars prop from the '90s, which was refit into a custom fabricated sheet steel housing and embellished with resin fan-created pieces cast from "found objects" such as an old car dash.

Immediately following its debut on the Tom Spina Designs website, the desk generated incredible interest on the internet. Within 24 hours, countless blogs and tech sites ran stories about the art piece and its “geek chic” appeal.  Within 5 days, the company web site had over 70,000 page requests and over 3.25 million individual image requests.

While the Han Solo desk is not available for sale, those interested in commissioning a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture art can expect to pay upwards of $5,000 depending on the concept. A Jabba the Hutt sofa, anyone?
