Prime Minister John Key has announced a new Securities Intelligence Service (SIS) Bill to allow the government agency wider surveillance powers.
The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service Amendment Bill will update the existing law - which was passed in 1969 - to keep it up to date with new technologies, law change, and modern requirements.
The Government aims to amend the Act during early 2011, in time to support effective security operations for the Rugby World Cup 2011. The new bill aims to allow for modern technical methods of surveillance and update policies relating the warrants.
