Experience a unique opportunity to taste the ‘Shackleton whisky’ replica, Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt, guided by a leading whisky expert.

Ernest Shackleton ordered 25 cases to accompany him on his expedition to Antarctica in 1907.

A century later the Antarctic Heritage Trust, who cares for Shackleton’s base on behalf of the international community discovered three crates left in Antarctica. They moved one crate to New Zealand and carefully thawed it to reveal eleven bottles. Three bottles went to Scotland for scientific analysis and the whisky was replicated.

The only official New Zealand tastings in partnership with the Antarctic Heritage Trust will feature 5 whiskies, including the very rare Glen Mhor 1982. It will be led by whisky expert Michael Fraser Milne from Whisky Galore, who was the first expert anywhere in the world to inspect and smell the original whisky. He featured prominently in the media on the whisky find and has followed the whisky journey ever since. Michael will give a first-hand account of the thawing process.
